Franz H Kohnke graduated in Chemistry from Messina University in 1981. From 1982 to 1984 he did a PhD
in Chemistry at the University of Sheffield, UK (awarded in 1986, supervisor Dr. J. F. Stoddart). In 1983 he
was appointed Researcher at Messina University. From 1/9/1983 he obtained a two-year leave of absence
spent at the University of Sheffield. In 1984/85 he was awarded a grant by the ‘Accademia Nazionale dei
Lincei’ in order to develop research at the University of Sheffield. From 1987 to 1996 he actively cooperated
with Professor J. F. Stoddart and his research group. In 1991 he was awarded the ‘Medaglia G. Ciamician’. In
1992 he was appointed Associate Professor (C05X). In 1996/7 he obtained a one-year sabbatical, which was
spent at Manchester University. In 1999 he was awarded a grant for foreign authors by the Royal Chemical
Society to write scientific papers in cooperation with Professor H. M. Colquhoun at Salford University. From
01.10.2001 he was appointed Full Professor (subject to confirmation after three years) and he has been Full
Professor since 01.10.2004.
He has been scientific coordinator for international cooperation projects funded by the NATO and the CNR.
He has been scientific supervisor for a research grants to cover the employment of a co-worker for four years
on a project entitled ‘Macrocyclic Compounds, Oligomers and Polymers Containing Aromatic Units: A
Supramolecular Study’ (started in 1999) and on a project entitled ‘Receptors for Anions as Supramolecular
Catalysts of Organic Reactions’ (started in 2006)- both funded by Messina University.
He has been the National Coordinator for a project entitled ‘Multi-component systems: synergism of different
macrocycles in molecular recognition processes ‘ funded as PRIN 2000 (duration two years).
His research activity is centred on the synthesis of macrocyclic compounds and their host-guest chemistry,
on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and on high performance polymers.
He is a member of the Editorial Board of the international journal ‘Supramolecular Chemistry’. From 2010
and with effect until March 31st 2013 he has been appointed ‘Visiting Professor in the School of Chemistry,
Food and Pharmacy of Reading University, U.K.’
He is the author of 70 articles in international journals.
Currently he is working at Messina University.
